A Life-Altering Diagnosis
When Brandon Fillingame began losing his eyesight, memory, and ability to function in his early 20s, his family was desperate for answers. After years of tests and uncertainty, doctors diagnosed him with cerebral ataxia with atrophy, a rare, degenerative condition with no cure. They were told his cerebellum was dying, and that his body would eventually forget how to eat, breathe, and function.
Faced with this devastating reality, Tonia Fillingame — Brandon’s mother — leaned into faith and prayer. As she puts it: “When you have nothing else, you always turn to God.”
Turning to Nature and Faith
Modern medicine has reached its limit. That’s when Tonia turned to something older: herbalism. Driven by love and urgency, she began learning everything she could about the healing power of plants. What started as a personal mission to support her son’s health became a lifestyle, and eventually, a business.
Tonia began crafting herbal remedies using ingredients grown and foraged on the family’s five-acre regenerative homestead in Pittsylvania County. Goats, turkeys, and chickens roam freely, while herbs, roots, and plants are grown without chemicals. The family also harvests local honey from their own hives and a nearby farm.
From the Kitchen Table to a Thriving Homestead Business
Over time, Brandon’s condition stabilized. His vision showed improvement, and the family began sharing their homemade tinctures, teas, and remedies with friends. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One of the first products to gain attention was their now-signature Not Today pain relief oil, made with Biblical herbs like oregano and cayenne.
Encouraged by testimonials and local support, the Fillingames formalized their work into what is now The Fillingame Homestead, a faith-rooted, small-batch wellness brand offering:
- Herbal teas
- Fire cider
- Magnesium sprays
- Salves, soaps, and tinctures
- Online and in-person herbalism classes
A Purpose Greater Than Products
Tonia emphasizes that their mission is not to replace modern medicine but to empower people to use what God already provided. Many of her students are nurses and healthcare professionals seeking a more holistic approach to wellness.
As she explains:
“We don’t just make products. We pray over every batch. God gave us everything we need: herbs, oils, plants. We just need to use them.”
Their home now includes separate spaces for production, research, shipping, and education. A true reflection of how far they’ve come.
Helping Others Through Healing
Today, customers turn to Fillingame products for relief from chronic illnesses, arthritis, allergies, colds, and more. Whether it’s a jar of salve or a bag of herbal tea, each product reflects the family’s deep care, spiritual commitment, and hands-on work.
Their journey is still unfolding, but one thing is clear: The Fillingames turned heartbreak into healing, and their faith into a business that blesses others.
